About Go!

Go (weiqi, baduk) is an ancient game, nearly 4, 000 years old. It originated in China, apocryphally, as a means to teach the Emperor’s son – an impulsive, brash boy - basic military strategy and forethought. Over the thousands of years from its creation to now, it has increased in complexity from being played on a 17x17 line board to being played on a grid 19x19 lines in size. Its 361 intersections are matched by the 180 stones on either side, although black has 181, because black goes first. You can find more in-depth rules and concepts on The Rules of Go page.

Go has a massive following, approximately 10% of the world’s population plays or is otherwise aware of the game. Go has been compared to western chess as chess has been compared to tic-tac-toh, and China, Japan and Korea all view Go as a cultural treasure, and a profession like any other. It has been featured in books (“The Life of Pi,” “The Ship Who Searched,” “Hikaru-no-Go”), movies (“Pi,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “The Go Master,”) and television (“Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda,” “Hikaru-no-Go,” “Criminal Minds,” “Bleach”), and is a traditional martial art.

The Glowing Stone is working together with the Russian Go Federation to bring to Canada Russian-language and native Russian-written Go texts, and to translate these masterpieces into English.
