The Glowing Stone Go Event Management and Outreach Program
The Glowing Stone was established in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 2008, as a companion program to a newly developed club at Wilfrid Laurier University. It is closely linked with the Canadian Go Association and its Marketing and Promotions branch, is a supporter/organizer for the Canadian Intercollegiate Go League, and has strong ties with the American Go Honor Society.
The Glowing Stone is run by people who love the game of Go (simplified Chinese: 围棋; traditional Chinese: 圍棋; pinyin: wéiqí; Kanji 碁[igo]; hangul: 바둑 [baduk]) for its own sake, not for profit. We provide our experience and our time to ensure that clubs (scholastic and community, national and international) have available to them a means to run effective events (including tournaments!), and an affordable means to obtain Go sets, among other merchandise, including Go-oriented books and memorabilia.
Between September 2008 and October 2011, The Glowing Stone has taught more than 21, 000 individuals, and more than 200 of those have come back for additional lessons and games. Much of our work to date has been with larger conventions and organizations, but as a stand-alone company we do quite well!
By playing Go, helping clubs get set up and bringing communities of Go players together, The Glowing Stone gains its greatest satisfaction. We work to make Go more accessible to the elderly and the young, to the able-bodied and disabled (see our work on Patents under the Black Stone Marketing heading!), and we have a team of three fully qualified engineers and two engineering students working on their degrees volunteering their time and energies to help make Go easier for all. We work gladly with other organizations, and our brother organization, Go For All, runs a similar initiative in the Ottawa Valley region of Ontario. Our wonderful web team ensures that, as new content is developed for the site and more clubs come to us, we can help clubs integrate into the greater community.
In September 2011, The Glowing Stone embarked on an agreement with Learn Go Canada, an affiliated Go instruction organization in London, Ontario.
